A really effective way to practice reading English, at any level, is to read children’s books. You don’t have to have children to read children’s books, but if you do, that makes it even better because they can learn English with you!

“You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild,

to pick up a book and read to a child.”

That quote is from the famous children’s author, Dr. Seuss. If you have never heard of him, maybe you know some of his famous stories, such as The Cat in the Hat, or Green Eggs and Ham. These books have been translated into over 15 different languages !

The books written by Dr. Seuss are especially adapted to learning English because they were written to teach children to read English, using limited, simple vocabulary. But the real joy in reading these books are the rhyming! Once you start reading, the text automatically becomes like a song. This way, you are forced to pronounce correctly, speak at the correct pace, and repeat vocabulary—everything you need to improve your spoken English!

Here are some examples of Dr. Seuss’ rhymes that appear in his books. To practice your English skills, try reading them once aloud. Then try to read them more quickly! See how fast you can go!

You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself, any direction you choose

As you can see, it can be quite easy and fun to read these books. And you don’t need to be a child, or reading to a child, to benefit from the English used: vocabulary, spelling, pronunciation…everything is included!

Another thing that people really enjoy about Dr. Seuss is the moral messages he includes in his books. One of his more famous books like this is called “The Lorax”, which describes the problems of industrialization and pollution in our world, to raise childrens’ awareness of this issue. Another well-loved book, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go”, is an inspirational classic, often given as a gift to someone who is embarking on a new chapter of their life, such as moving to a new city or country.

Dr. Seuss, a German-American writer, wrote a total of 44 books in his lifetime, which are very easy to find and buy online! His work has inspired television programs, Broadway musicals and a film. He has won many awards, including the Pulitzer Prize. As you can see, this not just any ordinary children’s author!

And lucky for you and all English students, his books are widely used in classrooms for teaching. There are many resources and English lessons available online to use in the classroom, or for your personal practice, with Dr. Seuss books!
